Stay Ahead of Vineyard Disease – AI Insights for a Healthier Harvest
Vineyards are facing severe weather events exacerbated by climate change, including frost, hail and excessive rainfall. These conditions have heightened the prevalence of fungal diseases like mildew, leading to significant crop losses, amid the wider challenges facing the wine industry.
Traditional monitoring methods often detect issues too late, leading to costly interventions and significant crop loss. To mitigate disease risks, there has been a shift towards cultivating disease-resistant grape varieties and adoption of technological innovations.
At Deep Planet, we’re changing the game with AI-powered disease detection, enabling early identification of threats like powdery mildew, downy mildew, and botrytis—before they spread.
🚀 Deep Planet in Action
Our AI-powered platform is helping growers to track and manage disease spread.
How It Works:
✅ AI analyses satellite, weather, and ground data to detect disease risks
✅ Customised dashboard and alerts highlight problem areas in real time
✅ Actionable insights help optimise treatment and reduce chemical use
🌱 Results for Wine Producers:
🌱 Reduce disease-related yield loss
🌱 Lower pesticide and labour costs
🌱 Improve grape quality for premium wine production
🔬 World leading research and collaboration
Our recent collaboration with UK's leading research organisation - NIAB, UK's innovation agency - Innovate UK and industry vineyards, has led to our cutting-edge research on AI for disease management using high resolution satellite imagery to achieve a high accuracy of 89.6%, 93.7% and 91.5% for Downy Mildew, Powdery Mildew and Botrytis Cinerea.
We will be co-presenting our work "VineAI: Artificial Intelligence for fungal disease management" at the 23rd International GiESCO conference at the Hochschule Geisenheim University in July 2025. Reach out to us if you will be there!
You can also read our paper on "Grapevine disease prediction using climate variables from multi-sensor remote sensing imagery via a transformer model", published at "Tackling Climate Change with Machine Learning Workshop" at ICLR 2024, which demonstrated that per-pixel disease predictions can enable precise, targeted interventions, contributing to more sustainable disease management practices.
